Prison break: movie, a reality in Maldives..
So far 20 missing from Maafushi prison-remaining inmates in hunger strike, 5 days now still goes on..
Last Tuesday (5th may) the country woke up with another shocking news. Maafushi jail was broken out by 400 inmates, 1 died & two were in serious condition. Few weeks after a suspicious death case of hussen solah-the story that made headlines every where for weeks. From the mystery of vanishing the body to doing the autopsy, (which made history as the first Maldivian to do so) to burying the body, it made headlines it made history. And again another story follows:
The inmate who died in maafushi prison break out was 24-year-old Muslih Abbas who was convicted of drug offences. Police said other two inmates were treated in IGM-hospital, who was in critical condition.
Police says the inmate died after swallowing tablets from the Maafushi prison pharmacy. But IGM hospital medical officials say cause of death “unknown” in medical documents.
The irony of this whole stoy was staff of Maafushi Jail in Kaafu atoll staged a protest on Wednesday, (the day after the broke out) over the visits by the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives, alleging dat they were discriminating against the staff by only focusing only on the problems and rights of da prisoners at the jail. Around 100 personnel from Maafushi Jail, including security staff, guards, and other staff members, were involved in the protest.
Following the disturbance n broke out of their cells Maldives Police Service began an operation Saturday (9th june) morning to search and confiscate any such weapons. The results came unexpectedly shocking. Large quantity of pharmaceuticals, syringes empty injection bottles, mobile phones, mobile phone batteries and their chargers buried in sealed containers. Som of dem were found buried at a depth of around one foot near the fence of the jail. This is the least, speaker systems, electric cutters; television sets were also found hhidden in maafushi prison.
This is the first time the govt. opened jail to be visited by Maldivian journalists. The results... Hilarious!! Also Depressing!! This shows how much that Department of penitentiary & rehabilitation has failed doing their job, taking their responsibility. More than 500 inmates are believed to be in maafushi prison now. More than 95% of them are under 35 years of age. More than 50% of them are drug convicts. Can drug victims be cured by jailing them? Is it a solution? so far It is just a Penitentiary. There is no rehabilitation.
